How does bias form?

If you breathe, you are biased. It’s human nature. Why? Our brain cannot

consciously process everything we see, so it creates shortcuts.

Unfortunately, these shortcuts can lead to unintentional, biased behaviors.

This is what we call unconscious bias. We don’t realize we have made a choice at all.

But we have.

Our brains are overloaded. We cannot consciously process everything we see in real time, so the brain creates shortcuts. Unfortunately, these shortcuts can lead to unintentional, biased behaviors – behaviors we aren’t even aware of.

This is what we call unconscious bias. We are typically unaware that we’ve made a choice at all. But we have.

How does this affect your business?

Hidden workplace bias refers to the impact of your personal preferences on your business decisions.  It is more costly than other forms of bias. You may be hitting your metrics, but it is holding you back from achieving your potential.

Does the following example sound like your workplace?

The Situation

In the show Seinfeld, George’s car is seen in the parking lot overnight. His boss assumes George is working long hours and decides to consider him for a promotion because he is working so hard. Managers can be inclined to believe that length of time in the office is an effective measure of how hard someone is working.

The Outcome

Actually, George locked his keys in the car and left it at the office. He wasn’t at the office working. But physically being in the office, does not mean he is contributing. This is a very common hidden workplace bias: Contribution Bias. It assumes that employees who are present longer, first in or last out, are somehow working harder. But often, they aren’t.
